These colour collages reflect my compositional approach of using self-imposed visual rules/rhythm to create a series or a system of relevant images. The “colours” in these collages are collected from old magazines I have accumulated throughout the years. The process of colour collection takes about a month of flipping through magazines, cutting out potential colour components, sorting them and determining the system of presentation once the collection is completed. The system of presentation is to mount these random shapes of colours onto square papers and trim them down to approximately 6″x6″. I find that 6″x6″ is the optimal dimension to view something in a comfortable distance – like reading a book. Anything smaller or bigger will require strenuous visual investigative activities. The process of selecting different colour pieces to fit into the square boarders reminds me of playing jigsaw puzzles. Although the compositions are abstract, there is a self-imposed visual rhythm that I follow to create orderly visual forms from piles of randomly collected colours. My main concern with this series is to convey an approach and a making process, not necessarily an idea or a content. I consider this series as completed, but it also contains possibilities of further development or a new direction for a more elaborated project.
