This used to be
August 23, 2024I am currently working on a series of black-and-white images created by multiple exposures. These juxtaposed images of mundane objects mimic the fragmented and obscured memories of daily life. The subjects are common landscapes found alongside the sidewalks of suburban Richmond. They are small and unnoticeable. I really need to look down intently to discover their visual attributes. I started this photo routine at the end of 2023 after a major surgery requiring me to take a break from my urban work routine. During my recovery walking was my main exercise. The first 2 weeks I was only able to focus on walking around my suburban neighbourhood while listening to podcast or music to keep me physically motivated. Gradually I was able to take photos with my phone on my walks to re-start my creative routine. Eventually I was able to bear the weight of a camera with me on my walk and that was when I started to observe the landscapes that were very different from what I used to shoot in urban setting.
I was listening to a lot Ryuichi Sakamoto during this time. I really like his minimalistic compositional approach in conveying complex and layered emotions. One of my favourite piece is "A flower is not a flower". I feel both the title and the music of this piece resonnate with the stylistic approach of my current project.
